Capability 03  ·  Edge AI

Edge AI.

Edge AI means the intelligence runs on the platform itself, not in a data centre somewhere. For defence autonomy this is not an optimisation or a preference — it is a requirement, and it shapes every engineering decision we make.

Why Not The Cloud

A link you cannot rely on
is not a link.

§ 01 / RATIONALE

Cloud inference assumes a fast, reliable, permanently available connection. In defence, that assumption fails routinely — links are contested, jammed, saturated or simply out of range. A system that stops thinking when the radio drops is not a system anyone can plan a mission around.

There are three further reasons beyond availability. Latency: a control loop that has to wait for a round trip is too slow to matter. Bandwidth: sending raw sensor data off-platform is wasteful and often impossible. And security: the less that has to leave the platform, the smaller the surface you have to defend.

The Engineering

Capable models,
tiny budgets.

The hard part is not deciding to run at the edge; it is making capable intelligence fit. Onboard compute is limited by weight, heat and power, and every watt spent thinking is a watt not spent moving.

  • Model efficiencyDesigning and compressing models so they run usefully within a strict compute envelope.
  • Deterministic timingGuaranteeing the loop completes on schedule, every time, rather than usually.
  • Thermal & power budgetSustained performance without overheating or draining endurance.
  • Graceful degradationShedding non-essential work under load instead of falling over.

The Payoff

What edge
buys you.

§ 02 / BENEFITS
01

Independence

The platform stays useful when it is alone, which is when it matters most.

02

Speed

Decisions happen at sensor rate, not at network rate.

03

Lower exposure

Less data leaving the platform means a smaller attack surface.

04

Bandwidth for what counts

Send conclusions, not raw video.

Everything described here is under active research and development. Nothing has been fielded, and we do not publish specifications or performance figures. Our first end-to-end mission test is planned for December 2026. Technical detail is shared directly with partners, evaluators and the armed forces under appropriate terms — get in touch.
