Big platforms get the attention, but some of the most useful autonomy is small enough to carry. Compact autonomous systems — the kind a soldier can put in a pack — quietly change what a dismounted team can see and do.
A tactical autonomous system can look around the next corner, watch a route, or hold an eye on an area — without putting a person in the exposed position to do it. That's a meaningful shift in risk and awareness for the people at the sharp end.
Working at this scale is its own engineering discipline. Size, weight and power are all tightly limited, so every capability has to earn its place. Simplicity and ruggedness matter more than features; a system that's fiddly or fragile is worse than no system at all.
